A Passion to Create: Impressionist artist Barbara Wood finds inspiration in life

BY H.M. CAULEY

Her use of large canvasses, bold colors, serene settings and pleasant faces draws the visitor into the artist’s passionate love affair with paint.

It’s hard not to notice the presence of women in the artist’s paintings. Whether doing something as simple as brushing a child’s hair, playing checkers or watching a ballet, women play a dominant role in Barbara’s work, much the way they did in her life.

It was always my passion to create. I know a lot of my work comes from the two big catalysts in my life – my mother and my grandmother. But I don’t stop to intellectualize when I get an inspiration. I’d rather capture a fleeting glance or memory.”

January 19, 2009/ WASHINGTON — “The Greatest” saluted the nation’s first black president at an inaugural soiree Monday night. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali, celebrating his 67th birthday, was the guest of honor at a party for 1,400that included other celebrities, lawmakers and native Kentuckians.”He wouldnt have missed this for the world,” Lonnie Ali said after Monday night’s Bluegrass Ball, a celebration of her husband’s 67th birthday.

Muhammad Ali carried the dreams of a generation during his prime as an athlete, and later as a humanitarian.

Ali XXV by Simon Bull“What’s interesting is that Muhammad had time to grow into his role as being a world humanitarian,” Lonnie Ali said. Obama on the other hand “will inherit the world on his shoulders, not just the U.S. And it is a much heavier burden than I think Muhammad had to face. But I think (Obama’s) his shoulders are broad,” she added. “He and Muhammad are really made of the same fabric.”

Native Kentuckian and actress Ashley Judd and artist Simon Bull unveiled a birthday gift to Ali – a pair of portraits of the boxer and Obama. The two appear in the painting depicting a close-up of Obama’s face looking off into the distance. Within the boundaries of the new president’s visage is a depiction of Ali as a boxer gazing over a fallen opponent – signifying a debt that Obama owes Ali and his fighting spirit, according to a release by the Muhammad Ali Center, which commissioned the portraits.

“Youve got Barack Obama, who’s the leader of the greatest nation on earth, and Muhammad Ali, who’s the greatest of all time,” mused Steve Buttleman, official bugler of Churchill Downs. “How appropriate is that? Its so fitting.”

We were on a cruise – Rhapsody of the Seas, Royal Caribbean line - sailing from Sydney. Nicole was our auctioneer. We found her extremely helpful, very pleasant and knowledgeable on the artworks. We appreciated her help in selecting the artworks we purchased and in making sense of the many choices.

We are looking forward to receiving our Charles Lee Violin and Cello Duet.

I am addressing this email to Albert but want everyone to know the quality of people on the ships. I have been buying from Park West for several years now. In meeting Ansophie and Shaun I must say they are the most pleasant and caring people that I have met on the ships. They truly made you feel cared for and taught me many things. I wish everyone was like the ex-teacher Ansophie, her methods were wonderful. I am in business myself and when your people chose this fine pair you did good. I believe I will have a wonderful relationship with Park West Gallery from here on out and it is thanks to the wonderful couple on the NCL Star in 2008.

Warmest Regards,

First off, we would like to thank Park West for the kind invitation to be a part of the Mexican Riviera cruise in December in celebration of the Gallery’s 40th anniversary. What an amazing even it was with not only Anatole Krasnyansky but also Itzchak Tarkay as well.

Ann Marie, Tim, Tom, Laura and Jason did an exceptional job of making everyone of us feel at home while attending to our every need. Simply put, they went all out and the event could not have been any better.

What an additional surprise it was to have David Najar and his landscapes there as well. It was a breathtaking experience.

We were truly honored to have so much time with one of our favorite artists, Anatole Krasnyansky. Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that we would have had the opportunity to have dinner with Mr. Krasnyansky. Mr. Krasnyansky and his wonderful wife, Nelya were always at the auctions and their joyous spirit always filled the room. After speaking personally to and getting the advice of Mr. Krasnyansky, we decided to bid on The Toreador. Being lucky enough to win the bidding, this beautiful piece will now grace the walls of our home.

Not only are the works of Mr. Krasnyansky fascinating and moving to those who have the honor to own any of his pieces, his personal story is poignant and motivational in its scope and depth. Simply put, he is an inspiration to those both inside and outside of the art community.

Park West Gallery Artist Victor Spahn Featured in Univers des Arts Magazine

Park West Gallery artist Victor Spahn was featured in the December/January 2009 issue of French magazine Univers des Arts

Victor Spahn, Univers des Arts

In a recent article entitled Victor Spahn: Precise Motion written by Patrice de la Perrière, the author discusses the themes often incorporated into Spahn’s paintings:

Victor Spahn loves movement and action, which allows him to depict his contemporaries’ sportive activities with graphic momentum where inspiration is unavoidable. Beyond a doubt, the way he treats varied subjects, adapting himself to them through means of tried and tested techniqes, makes Victor Spahn a dynamic specialist in situational painting. What interests him is the ability to seize an ephemeral moment, a vision surreptitiously glimpsed that he would have perceived with all the delectation of an imagery huntsman.”

Victor Spahn has participated in many exhibitions, including the Salon of Independent Artists, France, in 1970. He designed the set for the play Rembrandt of Glass for television and created a poster for the world championship of handball in 1988. Spahn has enjoyed the publication of a hardcover book on his work, and his serigraph Autumn Polo was acquired by Jacques Chirac, former President of France.

Spahn explained, “I try through my works to transmit to the public a certain concept of sportive life, favoring movement and precise motion in a determined context. If you believe the art lovers who come to my exhibitions, and in seeing their positive reactions, I think I achieve this transcription based on that encouragement.”
