Britto Tours AmericaRenowned Pop Artist Romero Britto Shares Sculptures with New Audiences

BEACHWOOD, Ohio – With the belief that “art is too important not to share,” internationally known artist Romero Britto is bringing his museum-quality work to communities across the country. One of the premier pop artists of our time, Britto will launch the Britto Tours America exhibition, hosted by Developers Diversified Realty on June 12, 2008 in Denver, CO.

While Britto is a regular in international galleries, private art collections and museums, the Britto Tours America exhibition is the first of its kind for the artist. The traveling sculpture tour will visit 11 Developers Diversified Realty centers throughout the nation.

Each of the 11 sculptures featured will stand between 5 feet 6 inches and 13 feet 5 inches tall and will include some of Britto’s most familiar images, including Big Apple, Dancing Boy and Blue Dog.

Azul by Romero BrittoBritto’s vibrant and passionate collection is easily recognized for its bright colors and bold compositions. His sculptures and paintings are exhibited on five continents and sought by art lovers everywhere, including collectors such as California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, tennis star Andre Agassi, U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy and philanthropist Eileen Guggenheim. The Britto Tours America tour offers different communities and audiences a chance to experience the whimsy and joy of Britto’s artwork.

We are thrilled to feature Romero Britto’s work at our domestic lifestyle centers,” said John S. Kokinchak, executive vice president of property management at Developers Diversified Realty. “We believe that bringing art to our communities creates an opportunity to inspire creativity, encourage art appreciation and support educational organizations. We are proud of this opportunity to foster awareness and learning of the arts.”

As a child growing up in Recife, Brazil, Romero Britto always had drive and a passion to excel. In his formative years, art was as a hobby as he pursued law and diplomatic studies. While serving in the Brazilian Army, Britto realized his dream to pursue his love of painting, and threw himself into his artwork.

In 1989, Britto brought his art across the Atlantic after accepting a friend’s invitation to visit Miami. He sold his art on the streets of Coconut Grove and got his big break when Absolut Vodka took notice of his talent and commissioned him to design a commemorative label. The project was a commercial success, and art lovers and critics began to take notice.

Following this amazing success, extraordinary opportunities and acclaim continued to come his way. He has been sought out for a wide variety of projects, including the historic 2007 partnership with the National Football League and Cirque du Soleil for Super Bowl XLI. He was recently invited to erect a 45-foot commemorative pyramid sculpture in London’s Hyde Park as part of the Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibition’s historic return to London after 35 years. Britto has also been commissioned for a variety of projects by notable companies such as Disney, Pepsi-Cola, Audi, Volvo and Movado.

Atmosphere Evolves at Rugby Grille with New Art to Accompany Lighter Menu

Custom-made pieces enhance new menu and restaurant’s continuing evolution

Townsend HotelBIRMINGHAM, Mich. | March 20, 2009 – As part of Rugby Grille’s continuing evolution, the Townsend Hotel’s award-winning restaurant has partnered with Park West Gallery to add seven contemporary pieces of art from some of metro Detroit’s, and the world’s, finest artists.

Art is an expression of life and these new pieces in Rugby Grille will greatly enhance our new healthier, lighter menu offerings and welcoming atmosphere,” said Keith Schofield, director of restaurant operations for Rugby Grille. “Much like Executive Chef Jim Bologna layers the unique flavors in each dish, these artists use color and light to immediately grab our patrons’ attention. The artists’ remarkable skill will dazzle the eye and intrigue the mind.

Rugby GrillThis art includes two hand-blown glass sculptures from April Wagner and Jason Ruff, a Pontiac-based duo whose work is formed by a process known as “fazzoletto,” where the glass is blown in freeform and not from a mold. The two pieces custom made for Rugby Grille — “Lime Swan Nest” and “Solar Flare” — encompass rich, vibrant colors, dominant curves and an energy that complements the restaurant’s enhanced allure. To create these pieces, the glass was heated to 2300°F and then blown and shaped into unique creations that characterize this art form.

Wagner and Ruff are both graduates of the College of Creative Studies in Detroit and have owned their custom-made private studio in Pontiac for the last 11 years. The skill and talent with which they perform their craft is enhanced by a love for Detroit and the local art scene.

Jason and I loved the space and the artistic opportunities that Rugby Grille offered,” said Wagner. “We also love Detroit and wanted to do something to show that this area is full of life and energy.

Complementing the two sculptures from Wagner and Ruff are five paintings from three of Park West Gallery’s most revered and respected artists. Tim Yanke, Simon Bull, and Alfred Gockel are each known for their use of color, imagery and ability to stimulate the senses. Their diverse backgrounds are evident in their work, exuding an international flavor that is in tune with The Townsend Hotel’s appeal to discerning travelers from across the globe.

American Palette by Tim YankeTim Yanke is a native Detroiter known for his spontaneous painting nature; he approaches each piece with no preconceptions. His piece for Rugby Grille, titled “American Palette,” draws inspiration from great abstract painters and uses bright colors and compelling imagery to capture the attention of viewers.

When Mr. Schofield approached me to develop a unique work for the new Rugby Grille, my first thought was to create a high-impact and eye catching work in keeping with the international theme,” said artist Tim Yanke. “The painting uses a multitude of colors to represent the diversity of our community and country. Other subtle references include our nation’s flag revealed from a slight distance as well as the text ‘golden coast of California,’ ‘providing a helping hand from sea to shining sea and to the rest of the world,’ ‘the Great Plains’ and ‘sierra mountains.’ I hope visitors to the new Rugby Grille enjoy the painting as much as I enjoyed creating it.”

Simon Bull’s two pieces, titled “Summer Haze XIII” and “Treasure,” reflect an inner beauty and examination of life that define this well-traveled artist. He learned different painting techniques while living in Hong Kong and throughout his education in England. In 2003, his painting entitled “The Journey Never Ends,” was named Print of the Year by the National Association of Limited Edition Dealers. He resides in California and continues his passion of combining colors and sensory harmonies to touch people’s lives through art.

Alfred Gockel’s two offerings — “Made of Sun” and “On the Rocks” — encompass fluid brush strokes in an “action painting” format that complements the new energy of Rugby Grille. In the last decade, well over two million examples of his imagery in various media forms have been sold in the U.S. art market alone. Gockel resides in his native Germany, where he continues to produce works with universal appeal to art enthusiasts worldwide.

Since The Townsend Hotel opened in 1988, it has received numerous awards and accolades including Mobil Four Star and AAA Four Diamond designations as well as a perennial position on Conde Nast’s “Top 100 Gold List,” and Travel + Leisure’s “World’s Best Hotels.” THE TOWNSEND HOTEL, a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, is located at 100 Townsend Street in downtown Birmingham, Mich. Park West VIP Guests Enjoy Their Latest Cruise

Dear Park West Gallery:

Words can not express how happy we are, make that ecstatic, over our recent experience with the Park West Gallery VIP Cruise you gifted us with!

First of all, we felt like kings and queens during the entire time we spent with your staff! From the Hyatt Hotel and the Italian dinner to the balcony stateroom aboard the Explorer, to the excursion to St. John, to the pre-parties and the auctions themselves, all the way to the processing through customs and delivery to our final destination, we could not have experienced better planning and efficiency. Every detail was thought out and provided for.

Even though the ship was beautiful and the islands a treat to see, the highlight of the entire experience was spending time with your intelligent, knowledgeable, well trained staff during the auctions and lectures. This was the highlight of our day and what we looked forward to every day!

Chris was an excellent auctioneer and educator. He brought in-depth knowledge to each and every presentation and delivered it with great style. The hours flew by listening to him and we were ready to stay and listen some more!

Simon always seemed to have things under control and was always patient and willing to help us, both with information about the artwork in the gallery and the art world in general.

Adam and Sebelle had unlimited energy and social skills right along with their great knowledge of each and every artist and their work. They had the ability to educate us about every piece we asked about and take it one step above the norm. They never pressured us to buy; they just shared every aspect about a piece so we could make informed choices. Even when we were not actively participating in the auction they had a smile, a greeting or a pat on the back for us. We felt that they really cared that we learn about art, acquire what was best for our collection, and have a wonderful time doing it.

Rebecca was the dynamo behind the scenes. She was always willing to discuss financing and payment options with us and always made us feel welcome, even if she had other things to see to. We smile over our favorite interaction with her when the bus driver at the end of the cruise told us we couldn’t get on the bus and she took charge and handled the situation in the true spirit of a bulldog, and all with a smile on her face.

The collection of art on board was outstanding! There was something for every taste and budget. Our dream was to purchase our first signed Picasso, which we accomplished. Not only are we now the caretakers of this fine work, but we have the entire history and background of its creation thanks to Chris, Adam and Sebelle. We purchased beautiful surprises also and can hardly wait until we have our gorgeous Mouly oil, our lovely Tarkay watercolor and our whimsical Markos acrylic all hanging in our home.

Thank you so much Jin for the invitation to be a part of this outstanding experience! We both feel this was the very best vacation we have ever taken together. Our travel companions were all friendly and had similar interests and provided lovely dinner company. We now have 50 new ‘best friends’ as well as terrific memories and gorgeous art.

Thank you all for ten days we will never forget!

Very sincerely,

Alan & Victoria

Thomas Kinkade on Race Day at the Indy 500

Courtesy of indy500.c0m Trackside Report –

Artist Thomas Kinkade, known as The Painter of Light™, is the featured artist for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Centennial Era. He painted a special portrait for the Centennial Era Gala on Feb. 27 and also painted the portrait that appears on the covers of the 2009 Indianapolis 500 Official Program and Indianapolis 500 Media Guide.

KinkadeIndy500

THOMAS KINKADE on the passion and work that went into the painting:

“The passion I have is to capture memories, to evoke the emotional connection we have to an experience. I came out here and stood up on the bleachers and looked around, and I saw all the elements of the track. It was empty at the time. But I saw the stadium, how the track laid out, the horizon, the skyline of Indianapolis and the Pagoda. I saw it all in my imagination.

I began thinking, ‘I want to get this energy – what I call the excitement of the moment- into this painting.’ As I began working on it, I thought, ‘Well you have this big piece of asphalt, the huge spectator stands; I’ve got to do something to get some movement.’ So I just started throwing flags into it. It gives it kind of a patriotic excitement.”

On some of the fine details in the painting:

“I just love the idea of the diversity of the crowd. I like having characters in the crowd. I started hiding people in it. I put Norman Rockwell in there. As far as I know he never went to the track, but he did now. Because he’s one of my heroes in the race world, I put a portrait of Dale Earnhardt. I tried to represent the different generations.

I view this painting as a piece of history. I will tell you, of the best events of my artistic career doing sporting events, number two would have been when I did the farewell portrait for Yankee Stadium. But the greatest event was taking this painting down through downtown Indianapolis during the parade (Saturday). That was fabulous.”
