NEW YORK, NY / MoMA.orgCézanne to Picasso: Paintings from the David and Peggy Rockefeller Collection is an intimate installation that highlights a group of nine exceptional early modern European paintings that have been promised over the years to The Museum of Modern Art by David and Peggy Rockefeller.

Thematically, the ensemble provides a small survey of portraiture, landscape, and still-life painting during the early period of modern art. Featuring superb examples of Post-Impressionist, Fauvist, and Cubist painting, ranging from Paul Cézanne’s Still Life with Fruit Dish (1879–80, detail shown above on left) to Pablo Picasso’s The Reservoir, Horta de Ebro (summer 1909, detail shown above on right), this presentation of the early flowering of modern art celebrates the Rockefellers’ longstanding generosity to the Museum.

Cézanne to Picasso is currently on view until August 31, 2009.

How Artist Peter Max Met His Muse

large_PeterMaxTwoHearts

July 17, 2009 / nwi.com – POP ARTIST PETER MAX is as easy-going, cheerful and accessible as his signature neon-bright paintings of hearts, flags and the Statue of Liberty. The genial ’60s icon loves to talk – about Woodstock, contemporaries like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, and his work with the Beatles on Yellow Submarine. But his favorite topic, endearingly, is his Muse – wife Mary Max.

“She’s so stunning,” he sighed, sounding 17 instead of 71. How’d they meet? Max exited his New York studio one day about a decade ago and spotted one Mary Baldwin chatting with friends on the sidewalk.

She was no stranger: he’d doodled her exact profile for years. Max rushed into his studio, returned with a drawing and handed it to the stranger, blurting, “I’ve been drawing you all my life.” His crush was politely unimpressed. “Her friends said to her, ‘That’s Peter Max!’ And she said, `Who?’”

He gave her his number, fretted until she called, then coaxed her to go to lunch. And that was that.

“I remember reaching over the table, kind of clumsy, and putting my palms on each side of her face and saying, ‘I’ll take care of you for the rest of your life,’” he said. “And she put her hands on my hands and said, `You’re in good hands with me.’”

They married the next year.

ARTIST SIMON BULL recently revealed his latest painting – a tribute to the “King Of Pop,” Michael Jackson.

“When I thought about celebrating Michael Jackson’s incredible life I wanted to come up with something that captured, in a straightforward way, the joy and vibrancy he brought to us all through his music,” Simon said of his work.

“I finally decided that nothing could be more direct than just his name spelled out like a neon sign, bristling with color, life and movement.

Michael, thank you for the music.”
