Salvador Dali Sketch for Marx Brothers Goes On Display

The Park West Gallery Dali Collection is one of the most thoroughly documented and authenticated collections of Salvador Dali artwork. For over 40 years, Park West has been a reliable resource for authentic work from the Surrealist master. Visit the Park West Gallery Dali website >>

Salvador Dali. Le piano surréaliste. 1937.

PUBOL, SPAIN — The Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí is set to present their latest acquisition by the Surrealist artist, Salvador Dalí - a drawing made from carbon and pastels titled The Surrealist Piano, which can be seen in Púbol until September 30.

The drawing, previously owned by American comedians, the famous Marx Brothers, was bought by the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí at a London Christie’s auction on June 23, 2009.

The drawing is one of the sketches Dali did during the breaks in the filming of the Marx brothers’ A Day at the Races. Dali drew the work for his solo exhibition and to participate in the anthological exhibition Fantastic Art Dada and Surrealism, organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The surrealist painter had expressed his fascination with the works by the Marx brothers and the figure of Harpo Marx, who invited Dali to paint him.

The Surrealist Piano incorporates several typical Dalinean themes, from the phallic cypress tree reminiscent of Böcklin’s Island of the Dead erupting through a piano, to the figure of a naked woman with the face of a clock.

Art Collectors Enjoy Park West Gallery Auction Weekends

Marcus Glenn. Girrrrl, You Gotta See This One. 2006.

Park West Gallery customers provide lots of wonderful feedback about Park West artists and art auctions. We are proud to share the following compliments from some art collectors who recently enjoyed a Park West art auction weekend…

_______________________________

We are ever so thankful for your providing us the opportunity to stay at the Biltmore during the VIP event to see what it really is like. As you know, we have been there for your dinner/auction events, but never stayed overnight. It was a real treat! All events were fun and we met some really wonderful people, plus the artists, Dominic Pangborn and Simon Bull.

Lord knows there was plenty of good food and drink. The ‘Dueling Pianos’ was a fun event and something we had never experienced before. There were people of all ages and backgrounds. All of the children attending were wonderfully behaved or kept busy so as not to get bored and be a bother. The hotel had a ‘Dive-In’ Movie on Friday night at the big pool. We had seen the movie, but it was still neat to see it projected on a big screen over the pool, suspended between the palm trees!

I used my camcorder while the artist, Simon Bull, gave us a demonstration of his painting. He is very entertaining. We met the people who live here in town that bought his demonstration painting and provided them with the footage. We enjoyed the artwork of the new artists you have added to your collection.

EJ assisted us from the ‘phone call invitation/set-up,’ all the way through the final minute before we left the Biltmore. Your Art Auctioneer and all the assistants in front of and behind the scenes were great!

Thanks again for this enjoyable weekend.”
