Chagall and the Mediterranean

Marc Chagall, known as the “poet-painter” of the 20th century, lived to be embraced as one of the most influential artists of all time. Started in the 1960s, the Park West Gallery collection is one of the world’s finest, with artwork by masters of art history, including Marc Chagall.

PISA – The Palazzo Blu exhibition Chagall and the Mediterranean is a show of  masterpieces by the Belorussian artist. This is the first of a three-year exhibit series dedicated to the great 20th century artists and their relationship with Mediterranean tradition, light and culture. 150 works by Marc Chagall will be on exhibit including paintings, sculptures, ceramics and lithographs all depicting the seascapes of France, Greece and all the way down to the Promised Land.

The exposition is divided into five sections, each with a different theme – Côte d’Azur is a series of paintings including Music and Lovers at St. Paul; Greece demonstrates the artist’s discovery of classical Mediterranean civilization; The Bible depicts the Kotel in Jerusalem and the Crucifying of Christ; and two sections are dedicated to his sculptures and ceramics (with corresponding gouache) and collages (a variety created using different materials).

Chagall and the Mediterranean is on view through Jan. 17, 2010.

Marcel Mouly. Printemps dans l'aube. 2004.Thank you for inviting us to another Park West VIP event. It’s always a joy spending time and being part of the Park West family. We had a wonderful and enjoyable time throughout the entire trip. The high level of creative energy among the Park West staff, as well as their personal pride in what they do, is always obvious and very gratifying.

In addition to the Alaskan cruise experience, the beautiful scenery, and all the delicious dinners, the Park West cocktail parties and auctions were excellent and so much fun. As always, they are intellectually stimulating allowing one to embrace aspects of economic, social and political history, and philosophy in addition to the consideration of many view points and theories. Many of the presented works of art by Park West, whether modern or classical, show me immense depth, variety, complexity and ingenuity.”

Pierre-Auguste Renoir. La Parisienne, 1874.SYRACUSE, NY – Visitors to the Everson Museum of Art experience a brush with greatness with the exhibition Turner to Cezanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales. Turner to Cezanne is on its first tour in the United States and will be on display at the Everson, making Syracuse the only city in the Northeast to host it.

Turner to Cézanne is drawn from an extraordinary group of 260 nineteenth- and early twentieth-century paintings assembled largely between 1908 and 1923 by sisters Margaret and Gwendoline Davies. The exhibition speaks volumes about taste, patronage, and philanthropy. The works included here also present a survey of modern art, from Turner’s Romantic naturalism to Cézanne’s modern aesthetic innovations. The exhibition is also a reminder of the value of creativity, and of persistence, as many of the artists were, at first, either misunderstood or scorned. Painters once rejected, like the Impressionists, are now in the pantheon of the world’s most popular artists.

Turner to Cezanne comprises 53 masterpieces, including Renoir’s La Parisienne, a Monet Water Lilies, van Gogh’s Rain-Auvers, J.M.W. Turner’s The Storm and Cezanne’s The Francois Zola Dam, plus work from Manet, Pissarro, Whistler, Daumier, Corot and more. The collection is considered one the National Museum of Wales’ most remarkable treasures and one of the great British art collections of the 20th century.

Turner to Cézanne is currently on view through January 3, 2010
