Dali’s Famous Mustache Adorns a Plane Nose

“Since I don’t smoke, I decided to grow a mustache. It is better for the health.” —Salvador Dali

In 2000, the Pop art of Peter Max adorned a Continental Boeing 777; this year, the signature mustache of surrealist Salvador Dali has been painted on a domestic Delta 757. The design is part of the promotion for an upcoming exhibit at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

According to the museum, Dalí: The Late Work, is the first major exhibition to reevaluate the last half of Salvador Dali’s career. More than 115 works will be on view, including paintings, drawings and prints. Among the highlights will be several works that have not been seen in the United States in 50 years—Christ of St. John of the Cross, Santiago El Grande, and Assumpta Corpuscularia Lapislazulina, among others.

The exhibition will also explore the artist’s enduring fascination with science, optical effects and illusionism as well as his connections to such artists of the 1960s and 1970s as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Willem de Kooning.

So the next time you’re flying the friendly skies, look out the window as you board the plane; it just might be a surreal experience.

Mitsie’s Memories: A Tribute to Marcel Mouly

We are so fortunate to have guest author Mitsie Scaglione, the wife of Park West Gallery CEO Albert Scaglione, sharing her personal stories with us and all of you. Please enjoy the first installment of “Mitsie’s Memories”…and we’re all looking forward to her many more stories to come!

~ Written by Mitsie Scaglione ~

For over 30 years, Albert and I have traveled here and abroad and have had the good fortune to meet with many of our artists, not only on a business level, but on a personal level. Recently, I was documenting many of the photos from our trips for our Marketing Department when they asked if I would like to share the photos and memories with our clients.

MARCEL MOULY
February 2, 1918 – December 17, 2008

It was always a pleasure to visit with Marcel Mouly and his wife Magy at their home/studio in the suburb of Paris. From the beautiful flowers adorning their front porch to the heartfelt welcome at the door, we always felt special.

As you entered their home, you took a right to Marcel’s studio where usually on the easel was work in progress basking in the sunlight from the many windows. He was always eager to show us the many souveniers they had purchased from their travels to exotic places – India, Greece, Israel, to name a few. He lived life to the fullest and was always captivated by the colors and hues of the different countries, with Greece being a favorite. You can see this influence in many of his paintings. Also, the woman in his paintings was a tribute to his wife Magy.

Marcel was also happy to play the host by wheeling out his beverage cart so we could be properly welcomed by aperitif. Then onto the business at hand — looking at the collection. And what a collection!

We were honored to have Marcel and Magy at our gallery for a V.I.P. event in September 2004. It was a magnificient show. Then at a dinner at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Marcel was honored where he received a standing ovation that deeply touched him.

Unfortunately, this was Marcel’s last visit to us. He passed away on December 17, 2008.

The Art of Giving Back

Park West Gallery Supports Community Organizations with Clothing Donations
Park West Gallery is kicking off its Park West CARES initiative with a summer clothing and merchandise donation program to benefit community organizations in southeast Michigan. Over 3,500 articles of new clothing will be donated locally during July and August to HAVEN of Oakland County, Grace Centers of Hope, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Covenant House, Detroit Rescue Mission and Vista Maria.

“This initiative is a great opportunity to give back to our local community, and continues our long history of supporting non-profits that provide hands-on help to people in need,” said Albert Scaglione, CEO of Park West Gallery. “Since these are all items that can provide basic needs or improve someone’s quality of life, we are extending this support to a variety of organizations that can immediately provide assistance to others.”

The first local Michigan donation was made on Friday, July 23rd to HAVEN in Pontiac, Michigan; they picked up women’s and children’s clothing at Park West’s Southfield Gallery. HAVEN will be giving the clothing to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault who have left their homes in search of temporary shelter.

“We are very grateful for this donation from Park West Gallery; it will help our families as they look to start a new life after leaving an abusive relationship,” says Belle Hornung, HAVEN’s Volunteer, Intern and In-Kind Donations Coordinator.

Donations are also scheduled for Friday July 30th to Detroit Rescue Mission, Friday August 6th to Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, Michigan and Friday, August 13th to Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac, Michigan.

Defining Beauty: Albrecht Durer at the Morgan

Albrecht Durer, Morgan Library and MuseumAlbrecht Dürer, detail from “Abduction on Horseback” (1516).

“What beauty is, I know not,
though it adheres to many things.”
—Albrecht Dürer

DEFINING BEAUTY: ALBRECHT DÜRER
The Morgan Library & Museum
May 14 through September 12, 2010

New York, NY—Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), preeminent master of the German Renaissance, transformed drawing in Northern Europe. Using his unrivaled talent as a draftsman and the force of his powerful artistic personality, Dürer tirelessly promoted drawing as a medium, creating works of exceptional beauty and remarkable technical skill.

Now, in an exhibition at The Morgan Library & Museum, eight extraordinary drawings by Dürer demonstrate the variety and dynamism of his draftsmanship. Exhibitions focused on Dürer’s drawings are rare, and this occasion marks the first time in more than twenty years that the Morgan’s outstanding Dürer holdings will be displayed together. Also included are prints and treatises by the artist.

In his pursuit of beauty, Dürer devoted careful attention to every aspect of artistic production. On view in the exhibition are a woodcut, its associated woodblock, and a letter to the patron for whom it was made. In the letter Dürer wrote, “Please let it be as it is. No one could improve it because it was done artistically and with care. Those who see it and who understand such matters will tell you so.”
