Happy Birthday Anatole Krasnyansky – Park West Gallery Art Giveaway

***This contest has now ended. The winner will be posted below, and thank you to all who entered!***

“[Krasnyansky's] art is characterized by dualities;
old world and new, history and imagination,
hazy architectural forms and sharply defined performers,
subtle tonalities and intense primary colors.
His scenes of old Europe juxtapose against his highly imaginative,
harlequin-like figures floating in space.
Though seeming worlds apart, the dual subjects and styles
of Krasnyansky’s art pay homage to…his roots..

Happy 118th Birthday Joan Miro [Video]

“You can look at a painting for a whole week and then never think about it again. You can also look at a painting for a second and think about it for the rest of your life.” —JOAN MIRO (April 20, 1893 – December 25, 1983)

Today marks the 118th birthday of Catalan artist Joan Miro, a man viewed by the art world and collectors as one of the most important artists of the 20th century, and the precursor for much of modern art.

Change a Lifetime During National Foster Care Month

The Oakland Press, Albert Scaglione, Park West Gallery

Foundation helps foster care youth

By SABA GEBRAI, Program Director of Park West Foundation

April 19, 2011 (The Oakland Press) — On March 17, 2011, we at Park West Foundation lost a shining star, a Blue Baby, both an athlete and a scholar.

Merceela Faith Pippen, a Mumford graduate, member of Mumford’s “Hoop Squad,” a graduate of Michigan State University and Foster care Alumni, made her transition in Detroit’s Receiving Hospital due to medical complications at age 22.

Since 2006, Park West Foundation, along with many partnering agencies and volunteers, have had the pleasure of supporting, learning and knowing hundreds of youth in and out of care, such as Merceela.

Each year in Michigan, thousands of children remain in the state’s care due to neglect, abuse or and/or absence of a parent. And not all of those children and youth who come into care will have the academic and social success Merceela was able to attain. Normally, the family is where a child will begin to form a cultural, social, religious and other layers of realities that affirm one’s identity. The family is planted in a community due to parent’s obligations such as employment, child’s school, place of worship, doctor’s office, extended family connections etc.

In the absence of a parent, these connections normally established by the adults in a family, are lost and thus, the child.

Specially during May, and everyday there are many ways that good people with an understanding of the privilege of being a part of a child’s life can do to make a difference.

Schools can do more.

Mumford High School should be proud to have been involved in Merceela’s life. The Mumford family served as advocates, an extended family all through high school, specially during events such as the Prom. Five years after graduation, coaches, teammates, a former principal were all represented at Merceela’s funeral. We can learn from Mumford, a perfect example that it takes a village to raise a child. People need to recognize talent in youth and give them an opportunity for meaningful activity and to have their own voice.

Most youth in care are forced to leave childish ways early and have better insight of societal ills and have increased empathy for the plight of other children in need.

Merceela was involved in many projects to give back to other children, including mentoring in the Foster Care Summer Camp of Michigan State University School of Social Work, partly sponsored by Park West Foundation.

Merceela gave back to other children in need through Park West Foundation’s Blue Babies, who are Michigan’s Children that overcame various adversities, but still chose to commit, to lead by example and serve as guardians/advocates of children’s rights. Family support and life-long connections are needed.

Merceela’s family connections, her sisters, brothers and the Neal family’s unconditional love and support added to her stability and consistency contributing to her academic and social success.

During Foster Care Month, Park West Foundation & the Blue Babies encourage all to have faith. Enough to take the first step and have the privilege to be in a child’s life.

Have faith that every little gesture of sincere dedication and consistency makes a big difference.

Have faith that you can inspire a child to reach his or her full potential.

Saba Gebrai is the program officer and Blue Babies director of the Park West Foundation. It was founded by Albert and Mitsie Scaglione of Park West Gallery in 2006 to more effectively address needs of foster care youth aging out of care by supporting innovative, creative and lasting solutions. Albany International Airport Presents Artist Leslie Lew in “Keeping Time”

"Keeping Time", Albany International Airport, Leslie LewPark West Gallery artist Leslie Lew (shown center) attends the “Keeping Time” exhibition’s opening reception at Albany International Airport on April 8, 2011.

"Keeping Time" Albany International Airport, Leslie LewALBANY, NY — Park West Gallery artist Leslie Lew is among seven artists selected to show their works in a prestigious new exhibition.

In Keeping Time, now on view at Albany International Airport, “Artists navigate the collective and individual mythology of nostalgia with an eye for its humorous, deceptive and often bittersweet nature.”

Lew’s signature “sculpted oils” depicting iconic imagery of American culture combined with Pop Art will surely delight the many travelers passing through the busy airport over the next several months.

From the exhibition press release:

“With humor and deep affection for the products and popular iconography of the past, Leslie Lew creates extravagant interpretations of comic book heroes, food packaging and board games. Her father was an advertising executive who developed, among other enduring ad campaigns, Sugar Smacks and its Smackin Brothers duo, who appear larger than life here in Lew’s painting.

In this tribute to her father and memories of childhood, we see the thickly sculpted, painted surface that has become the artist’s signature method. Images that we perhaps associate with mass-production are enlivened by highly textured brushstrokes and expansive scale. They are at once art and artifice – delighting in the seductive visual dynamics of commercialization while also imbued with a personal, interpretive quality that is distinctly anti-cynical.

When faced with the legendary things and characters of our youth, rendered with unrestrained enthusiasm, it’s hard not to smile, to remember the pleasure of eating animal crackers, toting the box on its little white string; to feel a little girl’s aspiration to be Wonder Woman, and to be transported by cartoon lives – so familiar and yet so unlike our own.”

KATHY GREENWOOD, Curatorial Assistant of the Art & Culture Program at Albany International Airport

“Keeping Time” is on view at Albany International Airport now through September 5, 2011. Download the exhibition invitation [pdf]

Park West Gallery CARES Brings Art Enrichment to Chicago Students

Goethe Elementary School welcomes 20 donated works, artist to inspire students, invigorate improvement projects

CHICAGO, IL – While it is said that art imitates life, parents and teachers at Goethe Elementary School in Logan Square hope it also inspires learning. The school is the recipient of 20 works with an approximate retail value of $20,000, donated by Park West Gallery, which was on display when artist Dominic Pangborn visited students on Monday, April 11, 2011.

Dominic Pangborn, Park West Gallery, Geothe ElementaryPark West Gallery artist Dominic Pangborn speaks to students at Goethe Elementary.

Korean-born Pangborn immigrated to the United States as a child, where he developed his mostly self-taught artistic skills. The successful working artist and businessman shared his inspirational story with sixth, seventh and eighth grade students during his visit to the school.

“We are delighted to welcome Mr. Pangborn, and to receive these works of art from an array of talented artists like him,” says Barbara Kargas, principal, Goethe Elementary School. “We hope that these gifts help nurture our students’ own artistic development, and encourage their academic achievement. We also hope that this donation serves as an invitation to other artists and community members to get involved with their local schools. We all benefit so much when schools and communities work together.”

The donation and artist talk are the result of a partnership between neighborhood group Friends of Goethe School (FOGS) and Park West CARES, Park West Gallery’s national outreach initiative. Launched in July 2010, the program provides art work donations to community organizations across the United States.

Beyond Monday, Goethe and FOGS hope that the donation spurs other partnerships with creative individuals and groups. FOGS is developing children’s programming for the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival and is working with artists to take part in beautification projects on the campus during its annual block party, both happening in late July. The group also featured local comedians and musicians at its recent fundraiser, which brought in more than $6,000 to help spruce up the school’s playground and outdoor field.

“We serve clients all across the country, including Chicago, and we are privileged to assist their communities through activities like these,” says Stoney Goldstein, Executive Vice President of Park West Gallery and Chicago resident. “Goethe is a wonderful example of how collaboration between schools, parents and the community breeds student success, and we hope that our contribution helps the school build on that success.”

Park West Gallery Art Book Donation Helps Support National Library Week

National Library Week, Park West Gallery

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. This year, the celebration will take place April 11-16 and the theme is “Create your own Story @ your library.”

In its first donation outside of Michigan and Florida, where Park West Gallery offices are located, the Park West Gallery CARES philanthropic initiative donated a collection of art books to the Lake Geneva Public Library located in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. In honor of National Library Week, which the Library celebrates all month, the books will be displayed during the month of April and available for check out.

The display is also done in conjunction with the “Arts Alive! in Lake Geneva” celebration this April. This city-wide event was initiated by Carol Smith of the Geneva Lake Art Association (GLAA), in collaboration with several art galleries and associations in Lake Geneva.
