PAUL SIGNAC (November 11, 1863 – August 15, 1935)

  • ARTiFact: He loved to sail and paint the water. In 1892 he discovered St. Tropez while on a yachting trip; he bought a home on the island (which he named La Hune), where he often invited fellow-artists such as Henri MatissePaul Cezanne and Pierre Bonnard.
  • Artist Quote: “The anarchist painter is not the one who will create anarchist pictures, but the one who will fight with all his individuality against official conventions.”
