Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, officially begins at sunset this Saturday, December 8, and runs through Sunday, December 16, 2012.

If you’ll be in the New York City area during this time, you can celebrate Hanukkah with the lighting of the world’s largest menorah, designed by the “Father of Kinetic Art,” Yaacov Agam. The 32-foot-high,  gold-colored, 4,000-pound steel menorah stands in Grand Army Plaza (Fifth Avenue and West 59th Street, across the street from The Plaza hotel). Every holiday evening at 5:30 pm, a candle will be lit—save for the Sabbath, during which the lighting will be at 3:30 pm on Friday and 8:30 pm on Saturday.

World's Largest Hanukkah menorah, Yaacov Agam, Park West Gallery

The lighting of a 32-foot high, gold-colored, 4,000 pound steel menorah in New York City’s Grand Army Plaza will mark the start of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. The first candle will be lit on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 20, with nightly lightings to follow until the menorah is fully illuminated on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Designed by world-renowned artist Yaacov Agam, the gigantic menorah has been certified by Guinness World Records as the largest of its kind. In fact, due to the height of the menorah, it will be lit with the help of a Con Edison cherry-picker crane. Specially-designed glass chimneys will protect the lights from the Central Park winds.

Sunday evening, Dec. 25, a special celebration will take place, including live music, singing and dancing, Hanukkah gelt (candies) for children and traditional hot latkes (potato pancakes) for everyone.

When: Dec. 20 – 27, 2011 at 5:30 pm (during Sabbath, lightings will be at 3:30 pm on Dec. 23 and at 8:30 pm on Dec. 24)
Where: Grand Army Plaza in Manhattan, Fifth Avenue at 59th Street near Central Park (map)
Admission: Free

NEW YORK (news.gnom.es) — The World’s Largest Chanukah Menorah will be proudly standing at New York’s most fashionable plaza, Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, by Central Park, between the Plaza and the Pierre Hotels. The first candle will be lit on Wednesday evening December 1, and the full Menorah will be lit on Wednesday evening December 8. All weekday lightings are at 5:30pm. Over the years the World’s Largest Menorah was lit by New York City Mayors, Abraham Beame, Ed Koch, David Dinkins, Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, Governors Mario Cuomo, George Pataki and David Paterson, United States Senators Jacob Javits and Charles Schumer, as well as many other dignitaries.

“The Menorah stands as a symbol of freedom and democracy, strength and inspiration, delivering a timely and poignant message to each person on an individual basis,” said Rabbi Shmuel M. Butman, Director Lubavitch Youth Organization.

The Menorah was certified by Guinness World Records as the World’s Largest. It was specially designed by world-renowned artist Yaacov Agam who lit the Menorah many times. It was inspired by a hand drawing by the Rambam (Maimonides) of the original Menorah in the Holy Temple of Jerusalem.
